The beginning of a world tour.
Busts: My Personal Winter is a solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Samara Golden. For its debut iteration at Workspace, Golden created a large-scale live video installation comprised of small sculptures of people with whom she discussed the concept of the piece. Drawing upon the artist’s interest in reversing the spectacle, the work gathers its form and momentum from itself. The actual materials in the installation are representative of an antiquated and curious conceptualization of femininity, pulling from notions of craftsmanship lost, and a romantic view of a pre-internet era. As a traveling sculpture on its first stop, Busts: My Personal Winter aims to be a work that is physically comprised of all the people who have ever looked at it. At its conclusion the piece will be a complex amalgamation, assembling artists, curators, and everyday spectators from multiple locations into a single space.

The entire installation was lit with black light, the faux tiffany/pizzahut
inspired stained glass lamps were made from painted foamcore mosaic.

All four walls of the gallery were clad in pleated lace per a gothic western pioneer spirit.

Samara Golden’s sculpture “Your so Dumb your favorite color is Clear” is constructed from photos culled from the Internet, mirrors and live video. The piece is engaged in an ongoing self-reflective and self-conscious act of self re-appropriation. Through doing so this work comments on conditions of ambivalence, confusion and self-recognition in a post-Internet age. This mise en abyme (or a picture within a picture) becomes further complicated by a series of texts activated as reflections in the sculpture through a process involving live video. In asserting this inherent ‘complexity’ Golden’s sculptures seek to question personal belief systems, self delusion, and anxiety. Illusion is used to set up a scenario in which “confusion” is the foundation. By using combinations of technology and traditional art processes, Golden’s recent projects take up the position of asking the viewer to enter into a reciprocal relationship with the sculpture.

This installation is constructed out of found objects, photographs, mirrors, and live video. The piece includes a video camera that broadcasts live images to a monitor at its base. A spectator observing the sculpture is captured by the video camera, and is then able to view an altered version of himself or herself on the monitor. By using combinations of technology and traditional art processes, Golden presents the viewer with multiple ways to see and enter the work. She creates an endless circuit of transmitting and receiving between sculpture, monitor, and viewer.
